Nielsen reported that U.S. pumpkin-flavoured sales jumped 14% to about US$308 million in 2013. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, pumpkin prices were up 11% last year.
Starbucks began selling the pumpkin spice latte in 2003 and to date has sold 200 million lattes while in recent years the drink has become more and more popular. As a result, other food service companies have started cropping up with various pumpkin products.
The ‘official’ return date for the Pumpkin Spice Latte was September 2, but some customers had the chance to purchase the product before the release date. Marketers created a sense of exclusivity to the product.
The latte combines espresso with steamed milk, pumpkin pie and fall flavours and tops it off with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices.
Starbucks also features pumpkin baked goods including the pumpkin cream cheese muffin, the pumpkin loaf and the pumpkin scone. All of these treats are made with real pumpkin and feature fall spices, cream cheese filling and pumpkin seeds.
Tim Hortons continually adds new and refreshed products to its menu. The company has added pumpkin products that are sure to please including the Pumpkin Pie Iced Capp, Pumpkin Pie Latte, Pumpkin Bagel, Pumpkin Pie Donut, the Pumpkin Spice Muffin, Pumpkin Spice Donut, and Pumpkin Spice Timbit.
These products will be available at Canadian and U.S. Tim Hortons locations in the coming weeks.
McDonalds did not start selling the Pumpkin Spice latte until 2013, ten years after Starbuck’s introduced its version. Its pumpkin latte mixes espresso with milk and flavoured syrup. Customers can request either whole or non-fat milk.
Other fall favourites include the Apple Baked Pie and the Baked Apple Oatmeal Muffin.
Second Cup is not far behind the likes of McDonalds and Starbucks while featuring its own Pumpkin Spice Latte. This creamy latte tastes like pumpkin pie along with a hint of nutmeg and is served hot or iced.

General Mills’ fall creations include Yoplait brand Original Apple Crisp yogurt and Yoplait Light Pumpkin Pie yogurt. The company has covered more customer target markets by offering a fat-free yogurt with 90 calories per serving.
Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard and Pumpkin Pie Blizzard
On September 2, Dairy Queen introduced the Apple Pie BlizzardTreat as the September Blizzard of the Month and also brought back its fan favorite, the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard Treat.
The Apple Pie Blizzard Treat includes real Granny Smith apple pie filling along with cinnamon pie pieces and vanilla soft serve. The Pumpkin Pie Blizzard Treat contains pumpkin pie mix and crunchy pie pieces blended with creamy DQ vanilla soft serve.
The Apple Pie Blizzard and Pumpkin Pie Blizzard can easily be made into DQ Cakes.
